Senator Meaba Demand End to Militarization of Ogoni
A former Senator in the state, Senator Lee Meaba has called for the immediate end to all forms of military occupation in Ogoni communities. The former federal lawmaker stated this while addressing journalists shortly after a protest march staged by the youths in the area demanding for the withdrawal of the military officers posted in Ogoni over the weekend.
Senator Meaba disclosed that the call had become imperative to inform the federal government that there was no justification for the redeployment of soldiers in the area adding that Ogoni communities enjoy relative peace at the moment.
According to him, there was no need for any to paint negative impression that there was a problem that would warrant the deployment of soldiers in the area. “Let nobody look for problem where there is none. Ogoni has been peaceful and there was no need for military occupation in our land” he stated. Senator Lee Meaba regretted that what happened on February 22nd and 23rd, 2016 could have been avoided in Ogoni land if the actors were not placing selfish interest above the lives of the people.
He used the opportunity to call on the president and the Chief of Defence Staff to heed to their call and direct the military to vacate the area.
