In a communication addressed to the international community, signed on behalf of the groups by the executive chairman and secretary of the Council of Ogoni Professionals, USA, Mr Anslem John-Miller and Neeka N. Meneh respectively, which was made available to Ogoninews, the groups which had been solely responsible for the coordination of the affairs of the Ogoni people in diaspora, said Nsuke is the "duly elected MOSOP President" and therefore should be supported.
The communication noted that:
"MOSOP is the conscience of the Ogoni people, the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole. It said MOSOP was founded on democratic principles when it elected its first president, Dr. Garrick Leton. MOSOP also adopted for itself a constitution to guide the conduct and activities of its members, especially its leadership. The framers of our constitution envisaged the usurpation and abuse of power by leaders with corrupt and undemocratic tendencies, and therefore ensured that tenure in office was clearly stated
It said the President was originally designed to serve a two year term and could be re-elected for a maximum of two terms. That part of the constitution was later amended to three year term and not more than two terms.
Unfortunately, we have watched our past president desecrate MOSOP Constitution. Currently, our organization is being ridiculed by Mr. Legborsi Pyagbara who still lays claim to the presidency of MOSOP. The lingering confusion over MOSOP leadership is not only sending the wrong message to organizations like yours, but also causing a slow decline in our integrity around the world. It is therefore our duty to ensure sanity returns to MOSOP’s leadership"
There is no more doubt about the illegitimacy of Mr. Pyagbara as MOSOP President. We therefore make bold to state as follows:
That the National Union of Ogoni Students (NUOS International, US) in their January 13, 2019 Press Release stated that Mr. Pyagbara’s presidency expired on December 31, 2018 (see attached).
That MOSOP USA in its November 10th, 2019 Communique declared that Mr. Pyagbara’s tenure as MOSOP President expired on December 31, 2018 and warned him from parading himself as MOSOP President.
COP-International agrees with MOSOP-USA and NUOS International, USA and further appeal to organizations, donors and the general public to stop any official dealings with Mr. Pyagbara as MOSOP President
That Mr. Legborsi Pyagbara is too corrupt to continue to lead MOSOP, an organization anchored on its integrity and democratic principles.
That we call on the public to recognize and accept the leadership of the duly elected MOSOP President, Mr. Fegalo Nsuke
In a followup communication signed by the secretary of COP, USA, the group said reiterated their gratefulness to for the many years of unwavering support to Ogoni and MOSOP and reaffirmed their commitment to working with the international community for our mutual interest (helping the oppressed around the world, including Ogoni).
