Ogoni Community Allege Plot of Another Military Raid
Following yesterday’s arrival of four military trucks in Bori, the traditional headquarter of the Ogoni people, the paramount ruler of the Bua Yeghe community, Chief Barinaadaa Gbaranee has raised an alarm of a possible invasion of the community by the Army.
Chief Gbaranee spoke yesterday during the visit of Senator Olaka Wogu, former representative of the Rivers South East and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the fourth-coming parliamentary rerun elections in Rivers state.
Chief Gbaranee said the people were full of fear and will return to the bush to avoid the brutality and killings that was meted on them during last week’s raid.
“We are not at war with anybody, no body is fighting but i can’t understand why the military was drafted in to kill our people” Chief Gbaranee said yesterday.
In what the Army claimed was target at capturing a militant leader in Yeghe, some Ogoni communities were raided last week leading to the death of two pregnant women, killing of traders, students and innocent members of the communities of Yeghe, Zaakpon, Kaani and other surrounding villages in Ogoni.
Although a full report is not yet available, an estimated 42 persons may have lost their lives as the military shot residents during the raid.
Chief Ndigbara had blamed Senator Magnus Abe and Hon Barry Npigi for the raid, saying his refusal to work for their interests ahead of the parliamentary elections is the reason they are after him. Both Magnus Abe and Mpigi have vehemently denied the accusations.
Parliamentary re-run elections have been scheduled for March 19, 2016.
