The Minister of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Mahmoud, has restated President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to implement the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoniland. The minister who spoke in Port Harcourt during visits to some of the sites where the clean-up is going on said the issue of Ogoni clean-up had been a mirage until President Buhari came to power.

He said the clean-up had now gone from being a mirage to reality.

“I have been to several sites, this is the last one, and we’ve seen the stages of work. From excavation to the actual treatment of the soil, and from the different depths at different places based on the level of contamination, we’ve seen it for ourselves. I can say, this is a big success for this administration,” he said. “I can say that the HYPREP team is doing a good job. The people of Ogoni that I’ve talked to, the youths, women, elders, leaders, everybody is happy with this and happy with Mr. President for keeping his promise to clean-up Ogoni. “This is something that is serious right from the start where we even had UNEP to do the assessment and are following the report of that assessment to the letter. This shows the commitment of the government, the commitment of the President, and I believe every Nigerian, not just from Ogoniland, should give this project a chance,” he said.

During a courtesy visit to the palace of King G.N.K Gininwa, the chairman, Supreme Council of Ogoni traditional rulers, where he met with the king, council of chiefs and youths of Ogoni, the king thanked the president for implementing the UNEP report, and asked that the momentum be intensified, just as more Ogoni contractors be carried along in the project. Speaking on behalf of Ogoni youths, the president of Ogoni Youth Coalition Movement, Comrade Sunny Bekanwah, thanked Buhari for carrying out the project and appointing an Ogoni, Dr. Marvin Dekil, as the project coordinator.
